When a very close and special friend asks you to be their wedding photographer you jump at the chance. An opportunity to offer something back to the people we love in thanks for their help and support over the years. However, once the reality of realising what you have just signed up for kicks in the nerves and fears overwhelm the feel good feeling you initially had!
No matter how many weddings you have photographed all good wedding photographers feel the internal patter of nerves on the big day. It’s the adrenaline that helps drive and focus our creativity. The slightly sick feeling I have before a wedding is important to me; it means I’m excited and I care very much about the events of the day ahead.
On this particular morning it was more than just a slight sick feeling I was petrified. I’m not saying that this wedding mattered more to me than any other wedding I’ve photographed, it was just whether I could step back and document the day rather than become emotionally involved. Of course the answer to that question was ‘no I could not’, but that didn’t seem to matter.
The Ducat and the Apps family were intent on having a raucous day and from the moment I got to Pippa’s mums house there was so much laughter. Sue (Pippa’s mum), as a surprise, had organised for her to arrive in a beautiful horse drawn carriage. What better way to arrive at a castle than by horse?
The ceremony room at Lympne Castle always looks stunning and with the sun pouring through the large bay window it was the perfect backdrop for Pippa and Colin to make their vowels to each other. This being the only part of the day where the laughter turned to tears and my photographing ability became temporally compromised. The party continued in the garden where Pippa’s cousins took full advantage of the sumo wrestling suits and as blogged previously the famous ‘Frankie dance’ during the wedding breakfast.
Looking back I’m glad I had the honor of capturing this special day, I’m also glad my other friends are already married :)
Congratulations Mr & Mrs Apps I wish you all the happiness in the world.
